    Meaning:
Make prayers to God, priority, as this affair, will dissolve all your worldly entanglements. He is the one who truly loves you and is your sole protector and caretaker, and you are his most beloved. Those who understand and accept this fact are the only ones who realize him inside themselves.

He is present everywhere and in every being. He is in every form of love, be it of that of a man to a woman, a chakor (a Bird that loves the moon) to a moon, a moth to light, or a bulbul (bird) to a flower (its nectar).

The Almighty manifests himself in every situation, be it in times of opulence or in dearth... or be it peace or war. For his love is boundless, most pure and the fairest in this world.

    Meaning:
A bird has taken off, as the rustling leaves give this news. Its flying high, kissing the sky and has began the search. The poet quotes a thought from an Assamese song in the initial lines, to connect to the unstable, ever-in-motion nature of human mind. Mind that never rests is always on a flight wanting to conquer the skies and everything there is to be conquered on this earth.

Mind has its own wings and hence is in no one’s control, but one’s own. It has the capacity to be wild, yet if it wants to be, it can be tamed. It can long for someone and yet, be in a state of complete disconnect. It is its own guide, its own coach; it creates problems on its own, and yet has solutions within...

It is always undergoing strife of some sort, sadly...while it is the closest to the god that resides within us. It may be a wanderer but ultimately, its home is in the body it belongs to...and hence one can’t find satisfaction anywhere, but within.

    Bade Bhagya, Manush Tan pawa
    Sur Durlabh saddh granth nagawa
    Sadhan dham moksh kar dwara

    Bande bande mein daag hai,
    Miyaan kaisa mazaak hai,
    Main naseehat kya doon,
    Sab toh hain sayaane yahaan,
Phir bhi saaf saaf keh doon,

    Miyaan kaisa mazaak hai,

    Sochein...Sochein...
    Yeh Zamaana Kharaab Hai
    Sochein...

    Meaning:
Song starts with the lines from a Hindu holy book called “The Ramcharitmanas”, written by Tulsidas a Saint, poet and a writer…a great devotee of Lord Rama. He depicts in his book that it is extremely difficult and rare to be born in a human form. It is also depicted in all Indian scriptures that even gods and goddesses long for it. Thus we must use this very valuable chance to meditate and clear our gateway to salvation.

In the later verses the Poet reiterates the fact of impermanence and unpredictable nature of life. Says that there is a part of the Divine in every being, yet there is so much ignorance and ego in people. He says that there is no use wasting this precious life in senseless arguments and actions rather use this life to sow good deeds, as the biggest secret is that...everything our soul truly seeks is within us. Hence stop running mindlessly behind happiness, materials or earthly infatuations, as none of this is here to stay forever.

    Context:

It is a spiritual song that explains the longing of a lover for his beloved.

    Meaning:

The poet’s heart yearns for his beloved, as everything else has lost its meaning. For his beloved is like a branch, that keeps the leaves of his love alive. Without which his existence is of no consequence and hence poet pines for his beloved.

The poet has broken free from the trappings of the society, and is now waiting to meet his beloved, because he can no longer bear this painful separation.

The poet quotes lines from Sufi Saint Bulleh Shah’s poetry, which tells the story of how the Saint was tortured by his own family members, when he chose to follow the Spiritual path.  He only goal is to meet his beloved, no matter how great the cost or the difficulties he must face. He lovingly says to the beloved that “you are the first and the last one of my life and are a solution to all my woes”.

The quest for meeting the beloved has left him completely detached, and hence the poet requests, the Spiritually Enlighten one, to take him as an apprentice.

    Title: Joh Chahenge Voh Karenge

Gar safar shuru hai to sangh hain raastey,
Tera banegaa, lamhaa rukega, jab chahega tu jahaan,

    Jo hoga dekh lenge,
    Haan ye hausle chalenge,
    Hum ummedien jod lenge,
    Naa rukengey na thamenge,
    Jee chahega jo karenge
Hum jahan mein rang phir naya bharenge,
Jee bhar ke jee toh lein isse jyaadaa maange aur kya

Har muqaam haasil hota hai usi ko,
Jo sifar ko saikadon mein gholataa chale,
Chaand kaarkhaana toh suraj pe ghar ho,
Jo waqt ko sahee sahee se tolaataa chaley,
Kya aadhaa aadhaa, pooraa iraada, jeet tay karegaa,
Jyaade se jyaada, ho khud se waada, hal hoga har imtahaan,

    Jo hoga dekh lenge,
    Haan ye hausley chalenge,
    Hum ummedien jod lenge,
    Naa rukengey na thamenge,
    Jee chahega jo karenge
Hum jahan mein rang phir naya bharenge,
Jee bhar ke jee toh lein isse jyaadaa maange aur kya

    Haar ka samandar khangaalein,
    Kashtiyaan kinaare lagaalein,
    Gum udaasiyaan gale lagaake,
    Muskuraahaton ke ghar chalein,
    Dhoop leke khilo,
    Andhiyaara dhodein,
Kaske baandh ke, ye paigaa taang de, chitra kyun bane, chitrakaar hai tu,

Har ek saans yudh mein ladtaa chale tu,
To choomkar tere kadam tujhe, ye zindagi milegi,
Khidmat mein teri, lagi rahegi, kaaynaat saari,
Tere bina, adhoori rahegi, har nayi puraani daastaan,

    Jo hoga dekh lenge,
    Haan ye hausley challenge,
    Hum ummedien jod lenge,
    Naa rukengey na thamenge,
    Jee chahega jo karenge
Hum jahan mein rang phir naya bharenge,
Jee bhar ke jee toh lein isse jyaadaa maange aur kya

    Jo hoga dekh lenge,
    Haan ye hausley challenge,
    Hum ummedien jod lenge,
    Naa rukengey na thamenge,
    Jee chahega jo karenge
Hum jahan mein rang phir naya bharenge,
Jee bhar ke jee toh lein isse jyaadaa maange aur kya

    Meaning:

The song celebrates the undying positivity in the human race, and its capacity to bring out the best in the worst of times. The poet projects the fighting spirit in us that has a way to find many possibilities, when the roads are blocked.

Life is a tough journey, with its share of ups and downs, but in the end the true winners are those who never let failures bog them down. Winners never see a glass half empty... but half full instead, even when faced with the toughest of challenges.

If we learn from our mistakes and use the lessons to move forward with hope, especially when the chips are down... we could not just control the result, but also our destiny. We should understand and accept “one truth”... that it’s only after one goes through the grind, can one really enjoy the true taste of life and then, one can relish its various flavors.

The idea was to do a world music song, rooted in Assamese culture and music. This song is an ode to man’s fearless spirit, perfectly captured through the poetic metaphor of a spunky kite in the open sky. It also showcases the free spirit, which refuses to settle and knows not any boundaries. The song also ultimately refers to the soul being freed. The song is an interplay between Mahalaxmi Iyer and Dominique Cerejo with Assamese folk singers Banjyotsna Borgohain & Sharodi Borah providing perfect context to the setting.

This is a song about the changing times. It’s a song that perfectly captures the dilemmas of life. It talks about the pressures of everyday life & the everyday questions none can escape. But it’s also about staying rooted, learning from life’s lessons and staying focused on your dreams. Zamana Kharab Hai, like life, is about never giving up.
